Alumni Snapshot: Matt Priest
Title: Project Lead
Current Organization: Centex Homes
Previous position & date at Perot Systems: Project manager (2002-2004)
What do you do in your current role and what do you like most about it?
I am currently managing the enterprise roll-out of a Web-based construction scheduling and payment authorization product used nationwide in all Centex Homes’ divisions. In addition to the roll-out itself, I also manage staff and vendor relationships and plan future application releases.
Tell me about your organization and what a typical day looks like for you?
Centex Homes is a Dallas-based company that is one of the leading home-builders in the US. In my role, I’ve spent a good deal of time working with each of our divisions getting their legacy system(s) data ready for conversion to the new application. I also do a fair amount of traveling to divisions to help validate the converted data and train our system administrators and field personnel on the new application.
During non-rollout times, I’m generally focused on counseling team members, addressing any issues, and prioritizing enhancements with our customers for future application releases.
What experience did you gain from Perot Systems that helped lead you to where you are today?
While at Perot Systems, working daily with our customers and my team members played a tremendous role in enhancing my communication and management skill sets. I also learned how to deal with and manage difficult projects and timelines, which certainly made a major contribution to my career growth. Although it is hard to isolate one primary lesson from my experiences, I would have to say above all else that good communication is paramount in managing any project.
Who was your role model or mentor during your career at Perot Systems?
I was fortunate enough to work with some stellar people during my time at Perot Systems. Dale Hamilton certainly comes to mind. Dale consistently approaches all projects with a level head, both during good and challenging times. He is always able to take a neutral approach to project issues and help mentor you to a final resolution.
Where did you go to school and what did you study?
I completed my undergraduate education at Texas A&M University where I received my bachelor’s of business administration in marketing. I later attended graduate school at the University of Texas at Dallas and obtained my master’s degree in international management studies.
What do you like to do outside of work?
When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Laurie. We live in Garland, Texas and have a home that is conveniently located near a number of nice walking trails. In my free time, I enjoy the outdoors including working in my garden, hunting, fishing, and running. My wife and I also enjoy traveling to different places and frequently visit Colorado, where we hope to retire at some point.
What’s something unique about you?
While at Texas A&M University, I was a member of the track team and was captain of the cross country team, where I won the last Southwest Conference Championship meet.
