Perot Systems launches Healthcare Academy to build talent pool

This January, Perot Systems launched a new and exciting initiative called the Healthcare Academy.  The goal of this new program is to deploy 200 entry-level, highly capable business analysts into vacant positions in the first year of the program.  The first class has 22 participants, seven of which are from the United Kingdom.

Why the Healthcare Academy?

Recruiting Challenges: The competition for skilled associates is increasing with pressure from vendors and consulting firms.

Competency Challenges: The current business needs require a consistent competency level that is flexible and deployable to meet client needs.

Growth Challenges: The demand for services is projected to grow rapidly.

Cost Challenges: The lack of entry-level staffing is affecting the profitability of existing engagements.

The six-month program is designed to provide an education in healthcare and technology to entry-level associates with a primary focus on college graduates and post-military personnel who desire to build their careers within Perot Systems.  The program is currently targeted to bring in new associates; however a curriculum for current associates is being developed for launch in 2008.

“The Healthcare Academy is a launch pad for new associates to begin a career in the healthcare technology field within Perot Systems,” said Patricia L. Bush, R.N., M.S, CHE Healthcare Academy, director/dean. “The program is a rigorous course of study and successful completion which requires an aptitude for healthcare and technology, character and a dedication to execute the concepts learned once deployed to the field.”

Participants in the Healthcare Academy will take more than 30 courses encompassing two distinct curriculums: healthcare knowledge and technology solutions.  The formalized curriculum is designed to offer modular-based lecture programs, in-classroom learning experiences, interactive learning activities and self study.

The program requires 12 weeks of intensive classroom coursework followed by a supervised three-month practicum on the account assignment of the new associate.  During this three-month period, client-specific case studies and on-line educational programs and competencies will be completed and tested.  Following graduation from the Healthcare Academy, participants will be involved in communities of practice and formal mentoring arrangements to help them further their education and skills.

Hiring is underway for 30 participants for the second class which is scheduled to begin on April 23, 2007.  In the fall of 2007, the Healthcare Academy will also begin classes in India.
