HHS To Release Health IT Funding

The Department of Health and Human Services announced new health IT grants.

On Tuesday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced it would release funding for additional health IT adoption grants. The $27.8 million will be used to support health IT developments at community health centers as part of the $2 billion allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) earlier this year.

The HRSA grants will be awarded to 28 community health center-controlled care networks and large multi-site community health centers as a part of the administration’s push to ensure that EHR initiatives actually help the populations they are intended to support. Funding will be used as follow:

  • $22.6 million will be used to implement electronic health records (EHR) at 18 health centers
  • $2.5 million will help five health centers devise plans to use existing EHR systems to improve patient health outcomes
  • Approximately $2.6 million will help four grantees implement a variety of health IT innovations, including the creation of health information exchanges between different providers and the incorporation of health IT at dental care sites
