So –What Derails Us?

We are at a seminal point in the debate on healthcare and the next four months are crucial to the future of the United States…

This past week, I’ve been traveling abroad.  I had a great conversation with a friend in Jordan on the policies of the United States.  Jordan is one of our “friends” in the Middle East.  It’s a fabulous country that is building upon a foundation created by His Majesty King Abdullah II.  As is common in the Middle East, our discussion turned from the specifics of healthcare information technology to the broader issues of “where are we headed” in policy related to the Middle East?  I expressed my concern that Presidents as a general rule can only have so many policy initiatives on their plate.  President Obama has three big issues.  First, the economy (like Clinton before him – It’s the economy stupid!) is most important.  He’s getting good grades in my book and among most economists.  The second issue is healthcare which has gotten stuck in the mud – just a bit – or, at least for the time being.  But – healthcare reform is a critical issue and must be resolved.  We all know it.  The third issue, which seems out of anyone’s control is the Israel- Palestinian conflict.  And, if this issue flames up – it will overshadow healthcare reform, the economy, you take your favorite issue – they move to back burner.  It’s my fear and yet – it’s my recognition.  There are only so many issues that President Obama can carry.  For those of us in healthcare – we should help carry forward the reform effort now for if we fail – it will likely be a couple of decades before we regain the debate again and then, it may be too late.
