The future: The patient-centric connected home.

In a few years we will start to see a major shift in the way we deliver patient care in the home, thanks to the adoption of in-home medical monitoring. The advent of new radio devices that are small enough for patients to wear and that are capable of providing real-time diagnostic information have created a new category of telemedicine.

This change will not only affect where we treat the patient. It will also impact healthcare’s long-term business model, since this shift in location will have the greatest impact on hospitals.

Strategic planning on how healthcare providers will need to change their current business, work flow, work force and payment process will be critical to the health of the hospital’s financial fortunes. Strategic planning for healthcare information technology must make sure care providers can participate in the home care setting, as well as strategically link home health monitoring equipment and services to a patient’s electronic health record (EHR).
