Effective MDM strategies can be applied to just about any functional or subject area within an organization. Usually, the best place to start is where the enterprise is spending the most time and money on data manipulation and presentation. Typically, the strongest Return on Investment (ROI) is where data is shared between departments, suppliers, customers, and finance. The target data elements usually revolve around Customer Data Integration (CDI), Product Information Management (PIM), and financial metrics (such as EBIT). Other areas to examine are where data is moved frequently from one department to another because there is greater potential for data inconsistencies when information is shared.
