Alumni Snapshot: Larry Clonts

Jim WilliamsTitle:
Chaplain

Current Organization:
American Legion Department of Mexico

Perot Systems Experience:
Larry joined Perot Systems in 1997 as a Team Lead after having been a contractor on the AT&T account in Florida. When he left Perot Systems in 2005, he was in Huntsville, Alabama supporting data and voice communications for the Captured Enemy Ammunitions project.

Where have you made your home since leaving Alabama?
About five years ago my wife, Diane, and I heard a neighbor talking about retiring to the lakeside area of Chapala, Mexico. We thought that was a little “looney” at the time, but we looked up the area on the web, and the more we read, the more interested we became. Neither my wife nor I had ever been to Mexico, so we decided to drive down and take a look for ourselves! We fell in love with the area immediately, and knew it was the perfect place for us to retire.

Tell us about your current position.
My most active involvement for the past two and a half years has been with the American Legion. I am a past Commander of the local Lake Chapala Post 7, which at one time was the largest American Legion Post outside of the USA. I am now in my second term as Chaplain for the American Legion's Department of Mexico. During my time as Chaplain I have performed funerals, memorial services, assisted with American holiday events such as Memorial Day, 9/11 Memorial Services and, of course, Veteran's Day services.

The American Legion here is much different than you typically find in the USA. Our primary purpose is still serving veterans, but we are a vital link for many Americans who live in Latin America. Many posts provide connections with the US Consulate for assistance such as passport renewals, Social Security benefit assistance and of course veteran's benefits assistance through our Service officers.

I understand you are an active volunteer?
My wife and I love horseback riding and have taken lessons for several months. That led us to work with a group at a local ranch called "Pasos Milagrosos," equine therapy for handicapped children. We have been volunteering our time since they started, and have watched it grow into a wonderful charity that is experiencing excellent results. It's amazing to watch the positive affect this type of therapy can have on a child!

What do you like to do for fun?
Diane and I both love to travel. Last October we took a trip through Antigua, Guatemala City and Panachel, Guatemala. Our next trip will be to Mazatlan, Mexico this November. You'll be able to find us at the beach much of the time as we recently purchased a condo in Puerta Vallarta!

What experience did you gain from Perot Systems that helped lead you to where you are today?
My experience with Perot Systems reaffirmed my belief that there are still companies out there that really care about their people. I have the highest regard for Perot Systems – I met so many wonderful people there.
