Dedication to Education

Perot Systems continues strong heritage of supporting education

Many associates are aware of the increasing numbers of projects Perot Systems is leading for the United States Department of Education. Most recently, Perot Systems won a $400 million contract to outsource the Departments information technology infrastructure. Because of our efforts, we are helping transform the way the business of education is conducted in America. What some associates may not know is that our commitment to education is not new; in fact, it has been at the heart of Perot Systems since our founding.

Our founder, Ross Perot, has long been an advocate for education. In 1983, at the request of then Governor Mark White, he chaired the Texas Legislature Select Committee on Public Education which studied the issues and continuing concerns relating to public education in Texas. Under Mr. Perots leadership, the committees work resulted in the passing of House Bill 72, which enacted sweeping reforms of the public school system in Texas, including pay raises for teachers, revamping of public school finances, and the landmark No Pass No Play policy which required students to achieve passing grades in order to compete in extracurricular activities.

In 1990 Mr. Perot again stepped up to make a difference in the education of Americas children by giving a significant grant to Teach For America, enabling the non-profit organization to launch its operations and raise enough funds to grow and prosper in its first year. Teach for America is a national corps of outstanding recent college graduates and professionals who commit two years of their career to teaching in urban and rural public schools. The organization is the largest provider of teachers for low-income communities in the U.S. and has been recognized for building a pipeline of leaders committed to educational equity and excellence.

Perot Systems supports education by providing pro bono services to the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). NMSI is an innovative non-profit organization created to facilitate the national scale-up of programs that have a demonstrated impact on math and science education in the United States. Perot Systems joins an impressive list of NMSI partners including The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and ExxonMobil, which has provided initial funding for NMSI in the amount of $125 million. Perot Systems is developing a software reporting system which will allow NMSI to monitor the financial and academic results of its grantees. The Chief Executive Officer of NMSI is Tom Luce, former Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Education and a long-time friend and associate of Mr. Perot. Mr. Luce worked closely with Mr. Perot on the Texas Legislature Select Committee on Public Education in 1983-84.

Within our corporate environment, we are honored to count the United States Department of Education as a valued client. Perot Systems currently holds five major contracts with the Department. Three contracts are with the Department itself and are focused on K-12 education while the other two contracts are with Federal Student Aid and are focused on higher education. The contracts are:

Education has played an important role in the history of Perot Systems and is one of the main reasons we were awarded the EDUCATE contract. It is gratifying to see our work with education now coming together with associates working both for contracted clients and on pro bono opportunities. said Peter Altabef, president and CEO. Our pro bono work with National Math and Science Initiative is a great opportunity for us to not only give back to our community by helping to provide children with the best possible education, but it is also putting us in the forefront of some of the most innovative activities in education.
